FEBRUARY 3, 2018 - COVINGTON
The Covington Buccaneers erased a 12-point second half deficit against Ansonia to cut the margin to two points midway through the fourth quarter.

Unfortunately, the Buccs couldn't make the plays needed down the stretch in a 70-63 defeat to the Tigers.

With Ansonia holding a 46-34 lead late in the third, Covington cut the margin to 48-41 by the end of the frame on baskets by Andrew Cates, Kleyton Maschino and Braden Miller to give the Buccs some momentum heading into the final 8:00.

Cates then scored on a trio of baskets, while Miller hit a trey and a runner to lead Covington back to within two points with just over 3:00 to go in the game.

But Ansonia, who scored 22 points in the final frame, received a huge bucket by Trevor Alexander and then forced Covington to foul by spreading the floor. The Tigers then made true on nine of 11 free throws down the stretch to pull away for the seven-point win.

Both teams traded baskets in the early going as the game remained deadlocked at 13-13 after one.

Bradley Wiggins and Nathan Lyle hit on two buckets each, while Zach Parrett connected on a jumper in the lane and Braden Miller drove to the basket for a three-point play with the bucket and the foul.

Miller connected on a pair of baskets and a free throw in the second, while Maschino hit a three-pointer and Parrett scored on a layup to go along with a Gray Harshbarger free throw, but Ansonia caught fire by scoring 18 points in the frame to take a 31-26 lead at the break. In all, 18 of Ansonia's first half points came on six first half treys.

And the long ball continued to be Ansonia's recipe for success in the second half as it hit on three more treys in the third quarter to push its lead to double digits before Covington had a late run to close out the frame.

This set up an exciting finish, only to see the Buccaneers come up short down the stretch.

Braden Miller led Covington with 19 points in what was a balanced scoring effort for the Buccs as nine players scored on the night.

Andrew Cates and Kleyton Maschino had big games off the bench by combining for 15 points.

Ansonia, who dropped in ten three-pointers on the night as a team, was led by Trevor Alexander with a game-high 21 points. Devyn Sink had 17 and Hunter Muir scored 13 as well.

Covington falls to 4-13 overall and 3-6 in the CCC with the defeat.

The Buccs travel to Coldwater tonight.

Andrew Cates came in off the bench to give the Buccaneers a spark.
