November 25, 2017 - COVINGTON
There wasn't very much that Covington girls basketball Jim Meyer wasn't happy about Saturday night after the Buccs defeated Fairlawn 60-29 in the home opener to go to 2-0 on the season.

"We had the alumni game earlier," Meyer said. "We had a great crowd. The girls just played really well. They played well offensively, they played well defensively, they were aggressive and rebounded well. It was a really good night."

After a close call in the opener with Houston Friday, the Lady Buccs made sure it was a very different outcome, opening leads of 18-3 after one quarter and 40-12 at halftime.

While Fairlawn could only manage a three by Lauren Dudgeon in the opening quarter, Sammi Whiteman sparked the Buccs with nine points. She finished the game with 20 points and 10 rebounds, despite playing just two minutes in the second half.

"That's exactly what Sammi (Whiteman) needed to do out there," Meyer said.

Lillian Hamilton had four, Jordan Crowell hit a three and Tori Lyle added two.

In the second quarter, Lauren Christian got on the board and Makenzie Long continued to show why she is on her way to a break out season as a sophomore.

She scored eight points in the second quarter and finished with a double-double with 10 points and 12 points.

"Makenzie (Long) is amazing," Meyer said. "She is a great athlete, who just happens to be a very good basketball player."

And back healthy after struggling with injuries her sophomore season, Lillian Hamilton had 10 points and seven rebounds.

"It is great to see three girls in double figures," Meyer said. "Something happened with Lily (Hamilton) last night (at Houston). She had been tentative in our scrimmages. Last night in the first half, all of a sudden she started to play aggressive on offense and defense. It carried over to tonight. I am just so pleased with what I have seen from her in these two games."

Dudgeon had 16 points and six rebounds, with a lot coming after Covington starters had left the game in the third quarter.

MaCalla Huelskamp added nine points and seven rebounds.

Haley Houshel came in and scored six points in the fourth quarter for Covington.

Covington finished 26 of 57 from the floor for 46 percent and three of six from the line for 50 percent.

Fairlawn was 13 of 47 from the floor for 28 percent and two of nine from the line for 22 percent.

Covington dominated the boards 49-22 and while Covington had 18 turnovers to Fairlawn's 18 - most of those came after the Lady Buccs had emptied the bench.

Covington will play at Twin Valley South Thursday, before traveling to Versailles on Saturday - the D-III state runner-up last year. The Lady Tigers just recently won the Division III state volleyball title.

"This was a great night," Meyer said. "Hopefully, this will give us some momentum heading into next week."

Although it will be hard to top what he saw Saturday night.

Sammi Whiteman made it look easy by scoring 20 points in just over two quarters of action.
